Do you need a stand for your red light therapy panel?

No, you don’t need a stand for a red light therapy panel, but it can definitely make the panel easier to use.

This is especially true with smaller panels, where positioning matters more. If the panel does not cover the area you want while sitting or standing, you may need to adjust it, your body, or change the setup between areas.

As an example, our red light therapy panel does not come with a stand. It comes with a cord that allows you to hang the panel from something suitable. That keeps the product simpler, more compact, and more affordable. But it also means you need to think about where and how you will use it at home.

For many South African homes, this is a practical question. Space, storage, delivery cost, product cost and setup convenience all matter.

Let’s take a closer look into this matter.

What does a stand do?

A stand holds the red light therapy panel in position.

There are many different designs. It may allow you to:

  • adjust the height
  • adjust the angle
  • move the panel around the room
  • use the panel while sitting or standing
  • target different areas more easily
  • avoid hanging the panel from a hook, rail, shelf, or door

The main benefit is alignment which ends up improving ease of use.

If you want to use a smaller panel on your face, shoulder, lower back, leg, or chest, a stand can make it easier to place the light exactly where you want it.

Can you use a panel without a stand?

Without a stand, you can definitely still use the panel. You just need a good place to either hang it, position it, which can be on a table, floor or even simply by holding it.

A hanging cord can work well if you have a practical place to hang the panel, such as:

  • a strong hook
  • a clothing rail
  • a shelf
  • a wall-mounted bracket
  • a suitable door hook
  • a secure frame or support

The important part is that the panel must be stable and safe.

Keep in mind, hanging the panel is only one alternative form of use compared to a stand. You can very easily mount a panel on the floor, a table or any stable platform.

Why a stand is better for alignment

As mentioned before, a stand can make it easier to use a red light therapy panel and end up impacting your frequency of use. If you are targeting some area of your body that is hard to reach, yes, I can help very much. In such cases, a stand is better as it will promote repeatable use.

This matters because red light therapy depends partly on distance and exposure time. A review on photobiomodulation explains that results can be affected by parameters such as wavelength, energy density, irradiance, pulse structure, and treatment duration. In simple terms, how the light is delivered matters, not just the fact that the light is red. You can read the review here: Photobiomodulation: underlying mechanism and clinical applications.

For some, a stand does not magically make a panel more powerful, it can make your routine more consistent.

The downside of a stand

There are downsides to a stand, but it might not be the same for everyone. I can depend on the intended use, the users, the room you plan to use it in, storage space and more. Here are some downsides to consider:

  • higher product & delivery cost
  • takes up a lot more space needed
  • you might need a dedicated room to store it, otherwise it can become an eyesore
  • more parts to assemble
  • more effort to move around
  • more storage space needed

This matters in South Africa because shipping larger items can become expensive quickly. A panel by itself is easier to pack and deliver than a panel plus a large metal stand.

A stand can also make the setup feel more serious, which some people like. But others may not want a big device standing around in their home. If you have limited space, having a smaller setup with only a red light therapy panel, a pair of goggles and power cord might be the best solution.

My practical view

If you are just starting with red light therapy, I would not say a stand is compulsory.

It is more of a convenience upgrade.

Start with the panel and see how you use it. If you find yourself constantly moving chairs, changing angles, or struggling to line it up with your face, shoulder, back, or legs, then a stand may be worth adding later.

For some people, the hanging cord setup or simply placing the panel or a table, chair, or some platform, will be enough.

The best setup is the one that makes you use the panel consistently.
