If you are comparing red light therapy panels, one of the first things you will notice is power.
You may see panels described as 300W, 600W, 900W, 1200W, or even larger full-body systems. It is easy to assume that the highest watt panel must be the best one.
But it is not that simple.
A higher power panel can be better in some situations because it may offer more LEDs, more coverage, and stronger output. But wattage alone does not tell you everything. If coverage is your main goal, it also helps to understand larger coverage areas. What matters more is the amount of usable light reaching your skin at the distance you are using the panel.
That is where irradiance comes in.
What does wattage mean on a red light therapy panel?
Wattage can be confusing because many red light therapy panels use “LED-rated power” in the product name. For the electricity side, read about LED-rated power and actual power draw.
For example, one of our panels is a 300W LED-rated red and near-infrared light therapy panel, but the actual power draw is approximately 90W according supplier specifications.
That does not mean the panel is fake. It means the 300W figure usually refers to the combined rated capacity of the LED chips, not necessarily what the panel continuously pulls from the wall.
This is common in the red light panel market.

What is irradiance?

In plain English, irradiance tells you how much light is reaching your skin at a given distance.
This matters because red light therapy is not just about how powerful the device sounds. It is about how much usable red or, if available, near-infrared light, reaches the targeted area.
For example:
- a panel may have high irradiance at 10cm
- lower irradiance at 30cm
- much lower irradiance at 60cm
Distance changes everything.
What is beam angle on a red light therapy panel?
Beam angle describes how widely the light spreads out from the LEDs. A narrower beam angle, such as 30°, concentrates the light more directly forward, which may give stronger intensity over a smaller area, while wider beam angles like 60° or 90° spread the light over a broader area but usually with less intensity at the same distance. This is why beam angle can affect both coverage and irradiance. A 30° panel may feel more focused, while a 90° panel may cover more space but be less concentrated.
Why higher power can be useful

A higher power panel can have real advantages.
It may give you:
- more LEDs
- larger coverage
- stronger output
- shorter sessions
- less need to stand very close
- better use for larger body areas
- more practical full-body routines
This is why larger panels are popular with people who want red light therapy for more than just the face.
A 300W panel is usually more compact and practical for targeted or semi-targeted use. A 600W panel is often larger and may cover more of the torso or legs. A 1200W-style full-body panel may be better for standing sessions or larger coverage.
In South Africa, you will see a mix of these options with some small and larger full body red light therapy panels sold through local marketplaces, wellness suppliers, and popular brands.
But bigger also means more cost, more space, more shipping weight, and usually more electricity use (although not as much as you might think).
There can be limits to a higher powered panel
More power is not automatically better because red light therapy appears to have a dose window.
A well-known review by Huang and colleagues explains the idea of a biphasic dose response in low-level light therapy. In simple terms, low to moderate doses may be useful in certain contexts, while too much light is not necessarily better and may reduce the desired effect. This is not to say a bigger panel with higher wattage is not good. No, it can have its use and definitely comes with benefits. This is just to give you some perspective and help understand that it might not always be necessary to order the biggest red light therapy panel on the market.
It’s more important to consider which panel gives you enough coverage and usable light to support your routine.
What do studies say about dose and power?
Most medical studies do not compare consumer panels by saying “300W vs 600W vs 1200W.”
Instead, studies tend to look at like:
- wavelength
- power output
- irradiance
- energy density
- treatment time
- treatment area
- number of sessions

A weaker panel is not automatically useless.

- it is used at the correct distance
- it covers the area you want
- you use it consistently
- the output is suitable for the routine
The trade-off is that a weaker or smaller panel may need:
- closer positioning
- longer sessions
- more repositioning
- use on smaller areas
So, is a high power panel better?
It depends, but high powered devices are normally bigger and come with a range of benefits such as a larger coverage area, shorter sessions and less repositioning. It does feel more premium, but often comes at a very high purchase cost.
For many people, a compact 300W LED-rated panel is a practical starting point. It gives you red and near-infrared light in a smaller size and makes storage a lot easier..
A 600W or larger panel may make sense if you want more coverage and are comfortable with the higher cost and size.
A full-body panel may make sense if coverage is your main priority and you are willing to pay tens of thousands for it.
