When you start comparing panels, you quickly see small desktop panels, medium panels, large panels, and full body panels. They can all look similar in photos, but the real difference is coverage.
A full body red light therapy panel is a larger panel designed to cover most of the body in one session, usually while standing or lying near the device. A smaller panel, like one of our 300W panels, is more compact and better suited to targeted use.
Neither option is automatically better. It depends on how you plan to use it.
Depending on the design, a full body setup may be:

How is it different from a smaller 300W panel?

Our smaller panel is a 300W LED-rated red and near-infrared light therapy panel with an actual power draw of approximately 90W, based on the supplier specification. The panel size is approximately 270 × 192 × 65mm in size.
That makes it compact and easier to use at home, especially if you want something that does not take up too much space.
A full body panel is usually much larger. It may have more LEDs, a bigger frame, higher actual power usage, more heat management, and a higher price.

The smaller panel makes sense if you want a practical first device or only need to target a specific area of your body.
A full body panel makes sense if you want maximum coverage and are comfortable with the extra cost and space needed.
Why would someone choose a full body panel?
The main reason is convenience.
With a smaller panel, you may need to adjust your position or move the device if you want to cover different areas such as your face and neck, shoulders, lower back, knee etc.
With a full body panel, you can cover multiple areas at once which can make sessions feel simpler.
A full body panel may be a better fit if you:
- want a larger coverage area
- want fewer position changes
- have enough space
- are comfortable paying more
This is especially relevant for active people. In South Africa, many people train, run, cycle, play padel, squash, rugby, or go to the gym. If you want a whole-body recovery-style routine after sport, a larger panel can be more convenient and save a lot more time rather than treating one area at a time.
Why would someone choose a smaller panel instead?
For some, a smaller panel is a good starting point. For others they only want to target a specific area and don’t need full body coverage.
A compact panel may be enough if you mainly want to use red light therapy for:
- face routines
- skin appearance routines
- neck and chest
- shoulders
- one area at a time
- post-exercise use on specific areas
- general home wellness
It is also easier to store. This matters if you live in an apartment, have limited space, or do not want a large device standing in your room.
A smaller panel is also usually more affordable. That makes it a sensible option if you want to start with red light therapy without committing to a large setup.

Is there research on full body red light therapy?
There is some research on whole-body photobiomodulation, but it is still a developing area.
One useful study looked at whole-body photobiomodulation light-bed therapy in trained males. In this randomized crossover study, 12 trained men performed high-intensity resistance training, including bench press, chin-ups, and repeated sprints. They received whole-body photobiomodulation before and after training in one condition and no PBM in another condition.
The researchers measured markers such as creatine kinase and salivary interleukin-6 after exercise. The study did not show a statistically significant reduction in these markers over the 24 to 72 hour recovery period, although there were some moderate effects that the authors suggested may be worth further study. This is useful because it shows that full body PBM is being studied, but it also shows why we should be careful with claims. A full body device is not automatically “better” in every outcome just because it is bigger.
Another 2024 study looked at photobiomodulation applied to large muscle groups using LED blankets in older adults with sarcopenia. The researchers were interested in strength and mobility. That kind of study is relevant because it looks at larger-area PBM rather than a tiny spot treatment, but it still does not mean every consumer panel will produce the same result. Full body and large-area devices are being researched, but the evidence depends on the device, dose, protocol, and user group. Bigger coverage is the main practical advantage, but according the medical studies, does not guarantee better results.
Does a full body panel use more electricity?
Usually, yes.
A larger panel normally has more LEDs and a higher actual power draw than a smaller panel.
For example, a 300W LED-rated panel might only have an actual draw power of 90W.
Many red light therapy panels are named according to their LED-rated power, while the actual power draw is lower. The same is relevant for a full body panel. It may use much more electricity because it has more LEDs and a larger output area. The exact amount depends on the model and actual draw power.
In general, red light therapy devices you do not use much electricity because sessions are relatively short, compared to other electrical devices.

A full body red light therapy panel can be worth it if you want the convenience of covering more of your body at once. For many people, a smaller panel is the more sensible first step. You can build the habit, see whether you enjoy using red light therapy, and decide whether a larger setup makes sense.
For a large full body panel, its biggest advantage is convenience. You can expose more areas at once and spend less time repositioning the panel or changing your body position.
Its main disadvantages are cost, size, storage, and somewhat higher electricity costs, albeit small.
A smaller panel, is more compact, affordable, and easier to store. It can still be useful for face, upper body, and targeted body routines.
